4ocean and the 8 million tons of plastic dumped into our oceans every year Posted on 10 Oct 11:36

4ocean is an international movement who are passionately removing plastic from our oceans, funded by sales of their 4Ocean bracelets, while helping to motivate people to clean-up our oceans and coastlines 1lb at a time. Oceans are fundamental to the health of our planet. To survive and prosper we need a balanced relationship with out planet’s oceans.

Seventy percent of the oxygen we breathe is produced by marines plants. Over ninety percent of the Earth’s water supply i contained in the ocean while thirty percent of the CO2 emissions produced by us is absorbed by the oceans. However, the rise of plastic in our oceans is taking our natural environment to the brink of disaster. In 2010, 215m metric tons of plastic went into the sea. In 2007, 2.12bn tonnes of waste was dumped in our planet’s oceans. There are now 405 similar dead zones that are devoid of life due to pollution.

This issue is made worst by the lifecycle of the plastic products that have been dumped in the ocean. A plastic water bottle can exist in the ocean for 400 years, styrofoam for 80 years, while aluminium will last for 200 years. In the most polluted places in the ocean, the mass of plastic is more than six times the mass of plankton.
