4Ocean and the damage being done by modern fishing techniques Posted on 13 Aug 15:12

4Ocean is a global movement who are using the funds raised by the sale of their 4Ocean Bracelets to pull a pound of trash from the ocean and the coastlines and to partner with organisations like SeaLegacy to support more sustainable fishing around the world. Their bracelet made from 100% recycled materials allows 4Ocean to raise awareness of environmental issues as well as donate a minimum of $10,000 from sales of its Overfishing Bracelet during 2018.

As part of this #stopoverfishing awareness campaign, 4Ocean are highlighting the dangers to sustainable fish stock from modern fishing techniques which are affecting both fisheries around the world and the delicate balance of life in the ocean. Some of these methods, like Beam trawling, Bottom trawling, Gill netting, or Bycatch fishing can not only deplete fish levels faster than they can replenish but can also damage and destroy fish habitats on the ocean floor. This problem is made worse by the fact that a lot of the equipment used in these methods are not disposed of properly or simply dumped in the ocean when too old to use. This discarded gear then becomes 10% of the ocean litter as well as a death trap for many marine animals.
