Awards Season! Posted on 5 Nov 17:12

This month finally sees the ceremony for the RETAs - our annual industry awards - which were cancelled earlier in the year due to covid restrictions.

Paper Tiger has been nominated for as Best Independent Greeting Card Retailer in Scotland. It would be lovely to think that we could win to top off our 40th anniversary year!

The Retas Awards are now in their 17th year, and we are regular nominees and occasional winners. They are the only dedicated awards to recognise and reward the UK’s very best greeting card retailers from right across the retail spectrum; there is an overall award that sets the independents up against the big players on the High Street. Millions of greeting cards are sold in thousands of locations - one in six shops in the UK sell cards - so reaching the finals of The Retas is a notable achievement for us.

It would mean a lot to my team and I to win the award this year. When we were nominated, I spoke to Jakki Brown, joint managing director of Max Publishing, which owns and organises The Retas and she said that “this must rank as the most challenging period for retail ever". My team at Paper Tiger have worked with tireless dedication to get the shops through the pandemic, and if we are winners, it will be a testament to their efforts.

To the outsider, industry awards can sometimes be a little introspective, but all Retas finalists were decided as a result of an industrywide poll of greeting card suppliers, reps and agents and validated by a panel of experts, so reaching the finals of The Retas 2021 is testament to the passion, inventiveness, nous and tenacity of the UK’s leading greeting card stockists, and also the critical eye of the judges!

It is also worth remembering that the sending of greeting cards is an engrained part of UK culture, with the general public spending an unprecedented £1.7 billion on greeting cards in the last year alone. Our tiny slice of that industry means a great deal to us! The nation leads the world in greeting card design and sends more cards per capita. The Retas Awards celebrate the very finest greeting card retail stockists in the UK but we couldn't do it without the support of the designers who make such amazing work for us to sell to you.

In a few days I will be putting on a smart shirt and tie (for the first time in a long time) and heading down to The Retas 2021 Awards lunch at the Grosvenor House Hotel on London’s Park Lane. I can't wait!

I will leave some space in my bag, just in case...
