Oscar Wilde famously said that "I never travel without my diary, one should always have something sensational to read on the train". And whilst my diary may be considerably less salacious, the sentiment rings true for me. I have kept a diary since I was a child. To my deep regret, the early instalments were not retained. I have a distinct memory of flicking through them in my late teens, before I discarded them.

That sense of regret lingers, but I have physically kept my diaries over the last 25 years - stacked on a shelf in my office. They are still checked from time to time to see what I was doing at any given time of the year. As the years have passed, I have added more and more details, so that the resource they provide becomes invaluable to me as I make my work and domestic plans. Those pages document the passing of time, the lessons learned, the achievements and the days I will remember all my life. The detail is in the margins.
