Researchers examined sea stars collected between 1976 and 2015 - expecting to find significantly more microplastics in the older specimens, seeing as mass production of plastic began in the 40s/50s. However, they found similar amounts in all of them, which suggests that plastic pollution started to become a problem much earlier than we initially thought.
